Auto transport pricing behaves differently on short hops, mid-range moves and coast-to-coast routes. This page explains how distance bands, vehicle class and the time of year interact so the estimate you receive makes sense.

Carriers price the whole trip, not just the miles. The per-mile rate typically drops as the distance grows.
- Under 500 miles: often a single-driver day or two, with the highest per-mile rate.
- 500–1,500 miles: regional runs where carrier availability is usually good on interstate corridors.
- 1,500–2,500 miles: multi-day routes where efficient loading matters most to the carrier.
- Over 2,500 miles: coast-to-coast, lowest per-mile rate but the highest total.
Vehicle class
Deck space and weight drive the difference between vehicle types. Compact and mid-size cars sit at the base rate; SUVs, pickups and vans add a size adjustment; oversized, lifted or dual-rear-wheel vehicles need specific carriers and are priced individually.
Open vs enclosed at each distance
Enclosed transport adds a consistent premium at every distance band because the trailer carries fewer vehicles per trip. The gap is most noticeable on longer moves, where the whole trailer is committed for several days. Open transport is the default for standard vehicles; enclosed makes sense for classic, luxury, exotic or low-clearance cars.
Seasonal demand
Snowbird season moves a lot of vehicles toward the southern states in autumn and back north in spring, and summer is the busiest moving season overall. When a lane is in heavy demand, carrier pay rises, and so does the customer price. Shipping outside those peaks, or offering a wider pickup window, usually helps.
What raises or lowers the number
Working from the distance band, the estimate moves up or down with these:
- Raises it: enclosed transport, an inoperable vehicle, an oversized or lifted vehicle, a rural pickup or delivery, a fixed urgent date, peak season on the lane.
- Lowers it: open transport, a standard-size running vehicle, metro-to-metro addresses on an interstate corridor, a flexible multi-day pickup window, off-peak timing.
Why an online estimate can differ from the final price
An estimate is calculated from the details entered and typical conditions on that route. The final price depends on a carrier actually accepting the load on your dates, so it can move if availability on the lane is tight, if the vehicle details change, or if access at either address is more difficult than expected.
